Carless days not needed?
PA Wellington Carless days might not be necessary if the present level of petrol savings ■was maintained, said the Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) last evening. Mr Birch, in a plea for continued voluntary restraint on the use of petroleum products, said that if present savings continued, New Zealand would overcome the present fuel shortage
without undue damage to the economy or interference with production. “Voluntary restraints are obviously making substantial savings, reflecting public understanding of the crisis,” he said. The alternative to voluntary restraints would be to disnipt transport and industry, or meet substantially higher spot prices for oil and damage the economy, Mr Birch said.
