7276 lack regular work
Christchurch still has more than 7000 persons facing employment difficulties, or more than 6 per cent of the local work-force. Figures released by the Minister of Labour (Mr Bolger) yesterday show an im- ( provement in the position., but the fall in the number of registered unemployed is! only 22. and with winter approaching and seasonal work! coming to an end the prob-,' lem may worsen. Christchurch now has .3650 registered unemployed and 3626 on special work, a total of 7276. At the corresponding time last year, 3042] persons were unemployed [ and about 1700 were on special work.
Of the registered unem-' ployed as at March 30 this; year 2199 were males and 1451 females. Employers notified 1151 vacancies to the; ditrict office of the Labour i Department in the fortnight; to March 30 and at the end, of the month only 135 were) not filled, these being skilled! positions or positions which I were expected to be filled' this month.
Among the registered unemployed were 352 school-leavers, a fall of 47 from the total at March 16.
University students were finding it increasingly hard to find part-time jobs, said the University of Canterbury Students’ Association’s student services officer (Mr R. Metekingi) yesterday.
