Buller coal sent to Christchurch
Westport reporter Buller coal is now being sent to Christchurch to ease shortages there, according to the district manager of mines (Mr J. Lundon). Only small quantities of Buller coal were being consigned to Christchurch because local mines did not normally supply the domestic market, he said. Coal supplies to Christchurch have been severely cut because of reduced production by Southland mines. Mr Lundon said the Strongman mine was producing much more coal for the Canterbury market and waggons of screened coal from Buller were being railed to help overcome the shortage. Buller coals were not especially suitble for the domestic market and were normally reserved for industrial purposes, but in times of shortage the coal was acceptable. Mr Lundon did not think
people were buying more coal than usual — it was more a matter of panic buying by people trying to beat rumoured price rises.
