Test for Japanese rugby team
The mettle of a developing Japanese rugby team should be severely tested at Rugby Park tomorrow when it meets Canterbury University A, a side chock-full of talent, in the opening match of its New Zealand tour.
University boasts a strong hackline with the 1978 Junior All Black, Gary Barkle, at half-back and the nuggety, resourceful Kieran Keane outside him.
Keane played four differ-] ent positions for Canterbury A last season before settling into the first five-eighths spot when Doug Bruce was out for some time with injury. Also in the line are the elusive wing three-quarter, Randall Scott, and Richard Wilson's long-time rival for the Canterbury full-back position, Doug Heffernan.
The side also has one of the biggest, and most powerful forward packs in Christchurch club rugby and the Japanese are likely to ; have trouble matching them in the forays. Among the players are the Canterbury B prop, John Edmondson, and the wiry lock, lan Stewart, noted for his ability in [the mauls. [ Japan’s main coach
[“Demi" Sakata, will be ! familiar to a number of Uni- | versity supporters. He played for both University [and Canterbury in the wing in 1969. i The match begins a 3 p.m.
