Polo upset
Waimate A caused the only surprise when it overcame an opponent on a higher goal rating. Amuri B, to reach the semi-finals of the Gould Cup on the opening day of the South Island polo championships at Ryans Road yesterday. For all first round matches, handicaps were ignored. Nevertheless. Amuri B. rated a six-goal team, was well beaten by a team which took four of the several scoring chances it created and a goal in the final seconds of the final chukka by Amuri gave the scoreline more respectability. Waimate. a five-goal team, was well led by its South Island representative. Robbie Meyer. He scored twice himself and played an important part in Waimate's second goal, one of two scored by Mick Hennessey. In the semi-finals today, Waimate will meet Ashburton B. who beat Blenheim A. 7-4. The other semi-final will be between Amuri A and Ashburton A.
Amuri scored a good 4-2 win over Ashley, being well led by its two three-goal players, Alan Calder and Graeme Higginson. Ashburton A convincingly beat Geraldine A, 11-1, with the tournament’s highest rated player. Emmett O'Sullivan, in good touch.
Results of matches played for the Plaisted Cup, fop junior teams, were: Blenheim R 4. Amuri C !•}; Wairarapa 6. Taieii A 2J.; Blenheim C 12. Geraldine B 1J; Taieri B SJ. Amuri D 4.
In the semi-finals today. Bien heim B will meet Wairarapa. and Blenheim C will play Taieri R
