Parliament House Canberra, Australia Announcement of design competition and invitation to register The Parliament House Construction Authority, on behalf of tne Commonwealth Government of Australia, will conduct a two-stage competition to select an Architect for the Parliament House which will be built on Capital Hill, Canberra, Austral la. The Competition will be open to any person or association of persons, any one of whom is registered as an architect, or is an architect who has applied for registration, under the laws of a State or Territory of the Commonwealth of Australia on or before 31 May 1979. Notification of intention to enter, which must be accompanied by a non-refundable competition registration fee of $5O and details of current registration as an Australian architect or evidence of an application for such registration, will be accepted by the Registrar, Parliament House Design Competition. P.O. Box 1233. Canberra City. ACT. Australia, until 31 May 1979. Competition Conditions and formal entry forms will be issued to all registrants during May-June 1979. The Assessors will be: • Sir John Overall (Chairman), Architect and Company Director, Sydney. • Mr. John Andrews, Architect. Sydney, Chairman of the Architecture and Design Panel, Visual Arts Board, Australia Council. • Senator Gareth Evans, Victoria. • Mr. I. M. Pei, Architect, New York. • Mr. Barry Simon, Member of Parliament. • Professor Leonard Stevens, Engineer, Melbourne, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Melbourne University. Competitors in the first stage of the Competition will be required to submit drawings and a report describing a conceptual design by 31 August 1979. Details and a programme for the second stage of the Competition will be announced at a later date. On completion of the first stage of the competition, up to ten designs will be selected and each designer will be awarded a prize of $A20,000. From the ten designs, up to 5 but not less than 3 will be selected to proceed to the second stage and will each be paid an additional honorarium of 3ABO 000 From the competitors selected to proceed to the second stage a competition winner will be selected and, subject to Commonwealth Parliamentary approval, will be engaged to design the Parliament House.
