Motorways safest

PA Dunedin Motorways in New’ Zealand are three times as safe as other roads, the Minister of Works and Development (Mr W. L. Young) told the Municipal Associations conference at Dunedin.

Mr Young was replying to a question by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr H. G. Hay) who asked how much research was being made into motorway safety and pollution.

He said that in New Zealand motorways caused no problem, but in some overseas countries such as Japan, where three-tiered motorways had been built* authorities had had to erect sound barriers to protect local residents from undue, noise.
