Mrs Watson drives winner
Mrs Lorraine Watson be-, came the first woman toi, drive the winner of a total-,■ isator race at Addington' Raceway when she was sue-' cessful with her own horse. Hydro Byrd, in the Rattray Handicap last evening. Mrs Watson was successful with the same mare two starts back at Methven on March 21. She also started at the Cheviot meeting last Monday, but finished at the tail of the field. i Hydro Byrd was given a 1 perfect trail behind Smart i Doll and she gathered in the < pacemaker with about 100 m 1 left. Hydro Byrd came on to 1 win handily by a short length from the fast-finish- ■ ing Crossfire, which was '■ slow away. 1 The smaii crowd gave Mrs j Watson a warm reception as ' she brought Hydro Byrd: back to the birdcage. Smart Doll just battled on! for third, shading the unlucky Ganelon and Crown! Top. The win favourite. Lumber! Boy, was left in the open! for almost the whole race and he was beaten at the 500 m. The Rattray Handicap was the middle leg of the on-i course treble. The first leg, the Probationary Handicap, resulted in an easy win for Flying Princess, driven by Jim Curtin. Maryfield held second, clear of Crow Bar and Nugget. The favourite, Tidal Wave, was a little slow and made ' no real impression in the j run home, finishing eighth. ■ $631 TREBLE Relinquish showed ability : to complete a treble worth ; $631.45 by gaining a narrow 1 win over Elgin Lady, which tried to lead for the last 2000 m of the Spreydon
Handicap. Relinquish was a dominat-i ing favourite for the race,! but his army of supporters were far from happy when i he paced for at least 100m' of the first 200 m and then galloped for about 100 m before settling dowm to trot.
The favourite was stilli I (‘giving Elgin Lady a start of;! (about 10 lengths when he i 11 began to improve three wide:; * from the 800 m. He wasi:
handy to Elgin Lady and Del Maria turning for home and gradually worked up to the pacemaker, taking the decision by half a head.
