Small recovery
Leading mining shares led'i a small recovery on Austra-I lian markets yesterday. Among the best gains on the mining boards were a 12c rise for C.R.A. ahead of a progress report on the. Ashton diamond venture. Ashton Mining rose 5c to; 110 c. : However, Hamersley eased 10c to 260 c on news from the annual meeting that) Japanese steel mills would; not renew steel pellets con-;’ tracts, and that the pellets I plants would be shut-down. > i White industries gained 3cl to 380 c with turnover topping 225,000 in Sydney, andll
other coal groups were ' firmer, apart from Utah ! which eased to 518 c. B.H.P. closed unchanged at 1165 c after climbing to 1175 c. The report of the oilflow from the Fortescue 4 well had little lasting im- ■ pact. Banking issues closed quiet. ICI rose 5c to 220 and ACI was up a cent as was I Hooker. Malleys gained 2c to 106 c. Turnover of shares was 36,000 in Melbourne and ; 290,000 in Sydney. However ithe expected takeover bid (has not materialised.
