HONG KONG, Jan. 19
The Governor of Hong Kong (Sir Murray Maclehose) has decided to appoint a full-scale marine court, presided over by a Supreme Court judge, to investigate the fire that gutted the former luxury liner Queen Elizabeth.
The judge will be helped by at least two assessors, one of whom will come from Britain.
The 83,000-ton vessel, once the pride of the British merchant fleet and bought by a Hong Kong shipowner for conversion into a floating university, is still lying haff-sub-merged on its side in Hong Kong harbour, its blackened funnels nearly awash.
Fire service officials making a preliminary inquiry into the fire say that they have been unable to find the cause, or even where the fire started.
The damage to the interior of the ship Is so extensive that it is extremely difficult to move from one part to another.
