OBITUARY
Mr J. L. Richards
Mr J. L. Richards, who died on Tuesday after a period of illness, was one of Canterbury’s more versatile and successful sportsmen. He was aged 64. Probably best known as a road cyclist, Mr Richards represented New Zealand between 1929 and 1933. He won the national 50-mile title in 1929 and the 100-mile championship in 1931, as well as the Southland road-tour title and several other provincial distance titles. He was also prominent in the annual Round-the-Gorges events and held the Christchurch-to-Akaroa race record for many years.
An excellent rifle-shooter and keen deerstalker and tramper, Mr Richards also competed with distinction in New Zealand and Canterbury archery championships. In later years he became an active member of the St Martin’s Harrier Club.
Mr Richards is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
