Instant Chips
(N Z P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, June 4. Automation threatens another great British institution—the fish and chips shop.
London’s first robot chip machine has been installed at the Elephant and Castle, the “Evening Standard” reI ports. Customers at the “instant chippie” put a shilling in a slot and wait 45 seconds for a carton of hot, freshly-cooked chips. A spokesman for Caterswift Petit Chef Limited, which is distributing the robots, says the machines 1 nee<’ only dispose of 40 por- ! tions a day to break even. But they are capable of proj ducing 320 portions a day and can operate right around the clock. The London and Home Counties Fish Caterers’ Association does not think the public will take to a machine dishing out chips. “We are not worried,” said a spokesman. “Nothing will
take over from the traditional fish and chip shops.”
