ELECTRICITY CONNEXION
No Power Of Refusal
The board had no power to refuse a power connexion to premises that it knew had not received a building permit, or might be of substandard construction, the enginedr-man-ager (Mr S. E. Slatter) told the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board’s monthly meeting. He was commenting on a letter from the Akaroa County Council’s Engineer (Mr J. D. Annan) who said that problems were being encountered with sub-standard buildings. Could the board refrain from connecting premises until it knew a permit had been approved? “We exchange information with the Paparua County Council, and we notify them if we hear anything, particularly on zoning questions,” said Mr Slatter. “We could do the same with Akaroa, but we can’t refuse a connexion.”
Any such arrangement would have to be unofficial, said Mr P. G. Wederell. The board could be in trouble if it set itself up as arbiter on whether a building was substandard. Mr Slatter was asked to cooperate with Akaroa.
