Inspector Jumps On Board

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 23. As the Tiri pulled away from the wharf Inspector K. O. Thompson jumped on board and walked to the bridge and told Mr D. O’Callahan, who was at the wheel: “I am an inspector with the Marine Department and I am also a police inspector.

“Thompson’s the name, he said. “If you don’t move back to the wharf you will be obstructing.”

Mr O'Callahan shouted: "Obstructing who?” Inspector Thompson left the bridge and repeated his warning to others of the crew. When the Tiri stuck on a mudbank, and appeared likely to stay there for some time, some of the pirates were in tears.

Policemen who climbed on board while the ship was stuck against the drawbridge were pushed aside and the Tiri headed for the open sea at a steady six knots—closelv followed by the police launch

Deodar. “The next move is up to the police,” said Mr Gapes. Off Devonport the police moved into the wheel house and engine room, forced the pirates away from the controls, and turned off the engines.

After a brief scuffle and some shouted abuse they took charge of the Tiri and as the ship wallowed helplessly the Deodar moved alongside. “You can’t stop us now,” Mr Gapes shouted. “Get out of it and let us go.” Inspector Thompson took charge and ordered the crew of the radio ship on to the Deodar with an escort of police.

As the launch moved away the prisoners started singing: “We AH Live in a Yellow Submarine.”
