Trip To Riccarton For Major Luca
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. Major Luca earned a trip to Riccarton for the New Zealand Cup meeting when he wop the Burnham Water Handicap for his Foxton owner-trainer, Miss D. C. Schimanski, at Trentham on Saturday.
J. A. Messent brought Major Luca forward on a big run from the back outside the furlong, and he won going away from the warm favourite, Sonya’s Pride, by a little more than a length. That performance has brought Major Luca into favour for the Ruahine Intermediate Handicap today. If he goes well in this and the J. F. Buchanan Memorial Handicap at Motukarara next Saturday his prospects on a course where he was trained for a time last season should be good. Fleeting Moment, from Woodville, and the Takanlni-trained Ginza won the on-course double on Saturday. Holders of 1480 5s tickets received £3O 15s for Fleeting Moment outstayed Tyrol, and brought the impressive winning sequence of Lord Erin to an end in the Rimu Hurdles. Ginza was much too smart for the other hack aprintera in the
Rimutaka Handicap. He cleared out in the last furlong and won easing up from Archimedes, which beat the unlucky favourite, Point Duty, narrowly. Rego Star kept his winning record at the meeting intact when he carried top-weight of 8-12 to a narrow but Impressive win over Model in the Karitane Handicap. The Takaninl-trained Fair Account probably earned favouritism for the Hinemoa Intermediate Handicap today, and a place on the list of fancied New Zealand Derby candidates, when he outclassed Michael Molloy and 10 others in the Belmont Handicap. . . Fair Account almost looped the field between the half-mile and the straight entrance, was a clear leader outside the furlong. and won as he liked. Fair Account gave the leading jockey, R. J. Skelton, his third win for the day. Skelton was also successful on Red Crest and Fair Account's stablemate, Star Belle.
