Bowls Gold Medal For N.Z. Four
(Special Ccrrespondcnt NJI.P.A.) SYDNEY. New Zealand won the fours gold medal at the world bowls championships in Sydney yesterday. Its team—N. R. D. Lash (Auckland), M. R. Buchan (Tc Aroha), G. H. Jolly (Dunedin) and W. P. O’Neill (Auckland)--won three of the week-end’s four final round matches and tied the other to take their gold medals.
D. Bryant, of England, won the singles title.
Australia, which had won the pairs and triples events the previous week, took the Leonard Trophy as champion country at the championships. Bryant won 14 of his 15 singles matches to gain 28 points and be outright winner of the singles title. J. Hershaw (Scotland) was second and R. Fulton (Ire-
land) third. Hershaw and Fulton each had 11 wins, but the Scotsman scored more shots. P. C. Skoglund (Palmerston North) finished ninth of the 16 entries in the singles, with eight wins. The New Zealand four had victories at the week-end over Australia (24-18), the United States (25-15), and England (23-17), and tied with Scotland 21-21). Australia made sure of the Leonard Trophy by taking second place in the fours above Scotland. Both had six points, but the Australians had scored more shots. Three of the New Zealand gold medalists had won copper medals last week for their four'h placing in the triples. FASTER GREENS
The New Zealanders, who won five of their seven matches in sectional play, really came into their own as a warm sun speeded up the greens during the final four rounds.
O’Neill, particularly, was in devastating form. Lash and Jolly were drawing from fine shots and Buchan, who had an off day on Saturday, had regained his touch in yesterday’s matches. When the tournament ended, the New Zealand four had been unbeaten in eight consecutive games—only a a tie with Scotland on Saturday spoiling their winning streak. The surprise in post-sec-tional play was the performance of the South Africans, who had headed their section with five wins out of seven.
But the Springboks did not win a match in the final four rounds, a tie with England on Saturday giving them their only points. “JUST WONDERFUL” Bryant, a 35-year-oid Somerset schoolteacher, made sure of his title when he beat Skoglund, 21-5, yesterday. Asked how it felt to be world champion, Bryant said:
“Wonderful, wonderful. I have been unofficial champion for so long, it's just wonderful to be the official champion."
Skoglund was a little dejected after his defeat by Bryant, but it was no disgrace to be beaten by a world champion who played the way the Englishman did.
