Finished Like A Champion
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE. The Australian veteran, K. D. G. Nagle, staged a grandstand finish to win the Wills masters tournament at Victoria Golf Club, Melbourne yesterday.
Nagle beat the Argentinian, R. de Vicenzo, by two shots. De Vicenzo, joint leader or only one shot from the lead for the first three days, appeared to have the tournament in his keeping when he led Nagle by four strokes with only six holes to play. But the Argentinian gave in under pressure and lost six shots to his rival over the last six holes. First signs of nerves for de
Vicenzo came at the 435-yard 13th when he took three to get down from the back edge and Nagle got a birdie to cut the leeway by two shots. Nagle cut the margin by another shot at the 14th with another birdie and drew level with his par at the next. Nagle went to the front when de Vicenzo three-putted on the short 16th. De Vicenzo could only make a par five on the last hole. Nagle chipped to within 12in for a birdie. Nagle scored 278 ( 69, 72, 69, 68) to de Vicenzo’s 280 (69, 71, 70, 70) with F. Phillips third with 283 (70, 70, 70, 73). The New Zealand players, W. J. Godfrey and B. T. Boys finished well down the field. Godfrey carded 299 (78, 71, 75, 75) and Boys 305 (76, 76, 75, 78).
