Books To Help Maori Children To Read
(N.t. Prtu Atiociation) WELLINGTON, July 25. A new series of books to help children of predominantly Maori background who were beginning to learn to real would be prepared by the Education Department soon, the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) said yesterday. A special guide for teachers of such children also would be produced. “The new readers will supplement Che present infant readers and will be written specifically to interest Maori children,” the Minister said. They would be illustrated in colour.
The readers and guide would be written by a former senior inspector of primary schools, Miss Myrtle Simpson, who was editor of the "Ready to Read” series, used in all infant departments and author of the teachers’ handbook which accompanied the series. Mr Kinsella said increasing attention was being given to Maori children’s learning to speak, read and write English.
