TROTTING R. Young May Resume At National Meetings
The Halswell trainer, R. Young, hopes to resume racedriving at the national meetings at Addington next month.
It will depend on the report he receives when the plaster cast supporting his fractured arm is removed and replaced today.
Young was injured in a spectacular smash at Adding- 1 ton Raceway during the Air- : ways Stakes at the Canterbury Park meeting on February 12. Eight of 13 runners were involved and Young was one of three drivers tossed out of their sulkies. What might have been partial inactivity for about two months has become a long recuperation period for Young. The ends of the bone, became calloused and prevented normal knitting. Recently Young re-entered hospital to have the arm operated on and the calloused bone removed. Since then the knitting process has been rapid and the arm should be back to normal in about three weeks. Lost Lead But for his accident Young might have headed the drivers’ premiership this season for the first time. Although he is usually high on the list and has been the leading driver of trotters several times, the premiership has eluded him. In February he had driven 35 winners for the season and was well clear of his nearest rivals. At present Young has four horses in work. Three of them —Adorato, Chief Command and Turbulence will race at the national meetings. Adorato was one of the stable’s most versatile performers this season. He won three races—from a mile and a quarter to two miles —and £1685 in stakes for his Christchurch owners, Mr and Mrs A. Sparks. He finished his four-year-old racing with a 2min 15sec assessment
Turbulence, which Young
prepares for Mr H. R. Brien, was not one of the stars of the team this season but managed to pay her way. Her only win —in the Bryndwr Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting—was worth £650. She earned another £5O, the fourth placegetter’s share of the Wildwood Handicap stake, at the last national meeting. Turbulence will represent the stable in the 2min 13sec class races at the national meeting next month. Smart Youngster Chief Command is a recent addition to the Young stable. This consistent My Chief colt was formerly pre-
pared for Mr P. Van Der Looy by J. S. Dalgety at West Melton.
Chief Command was a maiden pacer at the beginning of the season, but ended it with a 2min 16sec assessment the result of four wins. He was a minor placegetter in 10 of his other 14 starts and seven of those placings were seconds. His stake earnings for the season amounted to £l9lO. The other member of the team in steady work is the trotter, Free Globe, which won four races this season. Although this smart but unpredictable Johnny Globe mare will miss the national meetings she should be ready for early spring racing.
