Linred Outstays Steeples Rivals

Linred came into stronger reckoning as a Grand National light-weight prospect with a sound win under the top-weight of 10-8 in the Teschemaker Steeplechase at Washdyke yesterday.

Linred, a close relation of the champion stayer, Great Sensation, has now won his last three races, but his win in the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s feature race was his first in the colours Of Mr W. Aitken.

Game Call was then alongside Bandarshar in the lead, but was clear at the three furlongs, although not by much, from Linred. These two rose to the last fence together, but Linred had the stronger finish, and it gave him victory by a length.

His two previous wins, both at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s winter meeting, were scored in the colours of his Wingatui trainer, J. S. McKay. Linred has also had winning experience over Riccarton country. He won the Westenra Hunt Cup there last year.

Little could be said for the others. Bandarshar was 15 lengths back third and two lengths in front of First Watch.

William David was the best of the others.

The 17-year-old stable apprentice, G. C. Mee, rode Linred far back off the pace for the first mile, but the five-year-old responded generously when he was kicked up to go after the leaders.

Tutton crashed through the wing of the first fence when attempting to run off and dropped his rider.

Melotone was checked by the riderless Tutton soon afterwards and tailed off. He lost his rider late in the race.
