Big Increase Last Month

The number of cases of common illnesses reported by doctors taking part in the College of General Practitioners’ regular survey jumped by 744 from 1736 in the four weeks to June 12 to 2477 in the four weeks to July 10. Up to 21 doctors made returns each week, making a total of 75 returns for the period. They reported 979 cases of viral infection, 382 cases of acute tonsilitis, 365 cases of gastro enteritis, 254 cases of inflamation of the inner ear, and 234 cases of staphylococcal infection. There were also 49 cases of whooping cough, 43 cases of chickenpox, 35 cases of mumps, 17 cases of glandular fever and seven cases of measles.
