WOOL EXPORTS INCREASED
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 25. World exports of wool yarns and fabrics in the first quarter of 1966 showed “substantial increases” compared with the first quarter of 1965 and 1964, the Commonwealth Economic Committee reported today.
The figures showed a seasonal decline over the last quarter of 1965. However, preliminary returns from nine leading export countries showed that, in comparison with
the first quarter of last year, worsted yarn exports rose by about 11 per cent. Woollen yarns rose by 15 per cent and wool fabrics by more than 20 per cent. In the case of yarns, the largest increases were recorded by Japan, Austria and the Common Market countries, other than West Germany. West Germany and Britain each failed to reach their levels of a year earlier. In terms of weight, exports of raw wool from Argentina in April showed a rise of 56 per cent on a year ago, the committee reported. For the October-May period the increase was 67 per cent. In comparison, the Australian exports of raw wool in May, the tenth month of the 1965-66 season, were three per cent more than ip the corresponding month of the previous season. For July-May the increase was one per cent. Shipments from New Zealand in May showed a rise of 20 per cent over the previous May, and for the July-May period an increase of 12 per cent was recorded.
