INDONESIA TO REJOIN U.N.
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) DJAKARTA, July 25. Indonesia will send a mission to the United Nations General Assembly session in September, informed Government sources said today.
President Sukarno withdrew Indonesia from the United Nations on January 1, 1965, in protest against the appointment of Malaysia to a temporary seat on the Security Council. It was the first time any country had left the organisation. The Government sources said that the Indonesian mission will be headed by the Foreign Minister, Mr Adam Malik. Most Indonesian foreign policy changes had been held in abeyance pending the formation of a new Cabinet. The United Nations Charter has no provisions covering withdrawals from its ranks. The return of Indonesia is
expected to be a matter of mere formality, possibly accomplished with an exchange of letters between Djakarta and the secretariat. Indonesia’s return would increase United Nations membership to 118.
