Medical Aid Given

A mercy mission to aid a Cook Islands doctor suffering from severe abdominal pains caused the Moana Roa to arrive at Auckland on Saturday morning six days late. About midnight on July 14 an appeal came through to the captain of the Moana Roa, which was then discharging at Rarotonga. Dr. Koekoe, medteal officer to Pukapuka, 715 miles away, was ill, and the Moana Roa was the nearest ship able to give assistance since the flying boats could not use the lagoon.
The Moana Roa left the next morning with a surgical team and a replacement doctor. The trip took 51 hours. An operation for acute appendicitis was performed immediately, and a replacement doctor was landed to take care of Dr. Koekoe.
