‘Mutton For Cars’ Ruled Out
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 22. The question of New Zealand trade with Japan was examined this afternoon by the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) in a halfhour meeting with the general manager of the Hino Motor Company of Tokyo (Mr I. Wuchida).
Mr Shelton said he pointed out to Mr Wuchida that as both New Zealand and Japan were members of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, nei> ther was entitled to barter unilaterally.
Mr Wuchida yesterday suggested that New Zealand grant tariff concessions on a “mutton for cars” basis.
“Japan is at the present time buying its requirement for mutton and it is doubtful if any more could be supplied by New Zealand on the basis
suggested by Mr Wuchida,” Mr Shelton said.
“But the opportunity is available under the Kennedy Round discussions, now being held, for Japan to make an offer on New Zealand dairy produce (for which duty in Japan is 35 per cent). “If New Zealand gets this, we have already offered to halve the duty on Japanese motor-cars among other things,” said Mr Shelton.
