WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Brighton Adds To Competition Lead

In the second-to-last round of the Canterbury Women’s Basketball Association’s senior competition on Saturday, New Brighton secured second place by beating West A in a somewhat one-sided game. Sacred Heart beat St. Nicholas which, nevertheless, played spiritedly, and Teachers’ College beat West B. Results:— Sacred Heart 33, St. Nicholas 20. Teachers’ College 31, West B 22. New Brighton 29, West A 19. Points.—Technical 24, New Brighton 20. West A 15, Sacred Heart 15, St. Nicholas 8, Teachers’ College 5. West B 0. Sacred Heart v. St. Hicholas Sacred Heart was the stronger team, but St. Nicholas, as usual, provided a spirited opposition, preventing Sacred Heart from winning as convincingly as expected. In the early stages of the match, St. Nicholas was working well, but Sacred Heart’s form was a little below standard. St. Nicholas managed to keep up with Sacred Heart until some controlled shooting by J. Harnett took Sacred Heart ahead to 6-3. St. Nicholas, in an effort to even the score, increased the pace which resulted in many ill-considered passes, and lost balls.

Sacred Heart was missing goals, but St. Nicholas defence were hot strong enough to prevent Sacred Heart goal shoots taking many attempts at the one goal. By half-time the score was 22-S. After half-time St. Nicholas made up some goals, bringing the score to 12-23. but although St. Nicholas’ goal shoots were playing well. Sacred Heart’s defensive play was strong enough to combat this. Strong defence play, combined with excellent positional play tn the later stages of the game brought Sacred Heart into the lead, and the scores went from 17-28 to 18-28, to 20-29. Teachers' College v. West ■ Both teams are well down in i the senior competition, and i they provided an interesting match. West B played an excellent game, keeping the score margin I in the first half low and taking i the lead at half-time. 15-14. West was using a strong, fast technique of play held together by the captain, S. Drayton, but the pace became too hectic as the game progressed, and many balls were lost as a result. ; Teachers’ College closed up its play after half-time, and, i using a very effective combination, went strongly into the lead. D. McGregor, goal, and J Moore, defence, put Teachers’ College in its strong position. New Brighton v. West A I Both teams started well with good passing and controlled positional play. New Brighton took the first goal and this was followed with some untidy play by West's defences and New Brighton’s shoots. West was playing well in Its defence and centre thirds, but play in the goal third deteriorated. There seemed to be very little organised passing and many goals were lost because of this. New Brighton did not benefit as much as it could

have, but West’s misdirected passing did help Brighton to take an early 3-1 lead. As the game Progressed West’s passing deteriorated further, becoming too long and badly taken, and New Brighton led, 12-11, at half-time. Brighton, employing some very skilful play, strengthened its position as West became lacking in spirit. The second half was rather one-sided a< New Brighton went well into the lead.
