' Too Much Security’
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 24. Being guarded day and night by security men took the edge off the glamour for the contestants in the “Miss Universe” beauty contest held recently in Miami. “Miss New Zealand,” Miss Heather Gettings, who returned to Auckland today said the rigid control over the contestants strained the contest atmosphere. The girls had to keep to a strict schedule that often left no time for proper meals, said Miss Gettings. There was a chaperone to every two girls and even calls to the hotel room service were monitored. “The only relief I had during the competition was to spend any spare minutes standing in a fountain cooling my feet,” said Miss Gettings. The contestants realised that they had to be protected by security measures, but felt they could have been treated with more consideration.
