SPEED LIMIT
Probation Explained (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 24. The introduction of probationary driving licence regulations had caused some misunderstanding of speed limits for probationary motorcyclists, said the Transport Department traffic superintendent (Mr D. F. Ross) today. 1 Under the previous “learner licence” scheme, which applied only to new motor-cycl-ists, a learner motor-cyclist was restricted to a maximum speed of 40 miles an hour and was not permitted to carry a pillion passenger. Under the new probationary scheme, applicable to all new drivers, including motorcyclists, these restrictions no longer exist.
A probationary motor-cycl-ist may carry a pillion passenger. On an open road his maxium speed with passenger is 45 miles an hour, the same as a fully licensed rider carrying a pillion passenger. “A solo motor-cyclist, whether he is a probationer or not. may travel at speeds up to 55 miles an hour on the open road,” Mr Ross said.
