Malawi
Sir,—Your recent editorial on. Malawi makes this new republic almost a budding Rhodesia. In fact, the country would be a near slum if it was
■ not for the British taxpayer. •The white civil servants who ; alone are keeping the country
going are all on the payroll of Britain, along with their pensions. Millions of pounds
have been poured in by Britain to balance the economy. The unemployment problem is solved by sending them into Rhodesia, where they can still obtain employment, security, and a decent standard of living. European farmers, bar one or two too old to move, have moved on as farming is impossible because of pilfering, squatters, and lack of police protection. The only people who have gained from independence are Banda and his immediate entourage. The population, poor devils, can just about keep alive. Malawi is but a shop window, with nothing on the shelves behind.—Yours, etc., THE WALRUS. July 23, 1966.
