THE MID-WINTER SCENE AT SUMNER.—Our beaches at this time of the year are understandably deserted . . . except for a hardy band of young people who continue to ride the waves on their surfboards whatever the weather. These photographs were taken at Sumner during a recent bitter, mid-winter week-end. TOP: A lone surfer has the beach to himself, but in six months this area will be seething with hundreds of sun-worshippers. BOTTOM LEFT: Craig and Ewan Ansley, of New Brighton, are brothers who enjoy surfing all the year round. CENTRE: The water is icy but it is an exhilarating feeling to ride the crest of a wave at any time of the year. RIGHT: A quick rub down for boards and body keep both in tip-top order.
