TROTTING Jacobite May Not Race Before October
Jacobite has been recommissioned by the Tinwald trainer, D. J. Townley. No definite plans have been made for him, but it is unlikely that he will race much before the Ashburton Flying Stakes on October 1.
His racing afterwards will be planned to have him at his peak for the New Zealand Cup, a race in which he finished third last November.
Jacobite has not raced since Easter Saturday when it was discovered that he had injured a hock. The injury appears to have responded well to treatment.
Townley is also preparing Eyreton, Flying Over, Restabel, Newlands, Cindy, Batavia and Bronwyn for early spring meetings. Some of them might resume racing at the Kurow meeting on October 13. In addition, Townley is educating several unraced horses, including Zip, a rising five-year-old mare by Brahman from Elusive, by Lucky Jack. Elusive is also the dam of Misty Isle and Bogentassie. Top Row, which favours the trotting gait, is a rising five-year-old gelding by Stormyway from Bashful, the dam also of Reticent, California, Guiseppe, Diamond Hanover, Damian and others. Diamond Hanover was a useful winner some years ago when trained by Townley. The last two foals of Grey Grattan are in work. One is a rising three-year-old filly by Ike Frost and the other is a rising two-year-old filly by King Creed. Grey Grattan left an earlier fine winner at the trotting gait in Quite Contrary. A rising two-year-old colt by Secure from the Van Dieman mare, Vanese, is being educated, as are two rising two-year-olds One is a filly by Highland Air from Spangled Queen, which cost 750gns. This filly, bred by Roydon Lodge Stud, Ltd., Yaldhurst, is a halfsister to Adoiway, Spangled Princess, Roydon Prince,
Meadow mac and others. The other, which cost 500gns, was offered on behalf of Mrs L. M. Round, of Christchurch. She is a filly by Johnny Globe from Stella Potts and is closely related to Orbiter, Ordeal and other outstanding winners. Appointed Mr M. Mace, for some time assistant judge, has been appointed judge to the three Christchurch trotting clubs. He succeeds Mr H. V. Spicer, who has retired from judging at trotting meetings. Mr R. F. McCoubrey has been appointed assistant judge. Mr McCoubrey assists Mr Mace at several galloping meetings in Canterbury. For Addington Frontier Maid, a winner at long odds at the Canterbury Park meeting in May, Hal Special and Solo Flight will represent the Tinwald trainer, J. L. Ferguson, at the national meeting at Addington Raceway next month. Frontier Maid will have plenty of races to suit her early in the new season and might not be long showing form. Leased White World, which has raced most successfully for the Dunedin trainer, L. O. Shirley, has been leased by the Templeton trainer, D. G. Nyhan, who is preparing her for racing at early spring meetings. The daughter of Johnny Globe and Blizzard failed to win a race this season, but was twice placed from 13 starts. For much of the season she was troubled by soreness. Profit A profit of £169 is shown in the accounts to be present-
ed at the annual meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Trotting Owners and Breeders’ Association in Ashburton on August 15. The association now has accumulated funds valued at £lBBO. During the year 350 horses competed in qualifying trials run by the association, says the report of the president (Mr M. C. McTlgue). Of those, 46 qualified to start at totalisator meetings. Retired Kinsella, a sister to Orbiter, has been retired to the stud by her breeder-trainer, W. L. Bagrie. Kinsella was troubled by soreness during the current season and it was decided to retire her rather than risk a serious breakdown. Kinsella showed worthwhile form as a stayer and graduated to a 2:13 mark. Kinsella’s first foal will be bred by Mr C. Morrison, of Cheviot, on whose property Bagrie’s horses have usually been turned out to spell.
