Box 675, Christchurch, for confidential appointment 2463 AN INVITATION TO FIJI THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT in Fiji is expanding its staff to meet the demands of a five year development plan and has vacancies for:— (a) 4 Architects. (b) 1 Executive Engineer( Roads). (c) 3 Executive Engineers (Water Supply). (d) 1 Quantity Surveyor (e) 8 Architectural Assistants (f) 1 Building Supervisor (Work Study). (g) 1 Personnel Officer. The following minimum qualifications are required for the above posts:— (a) Architects: Applicants must hold appropriate qualifications and must have had at least five years’ experience in a position of responsibility. Previous experience in tropical or sub-tropical design would be an advantage but is not essential. The Government Architect’s Section handles all types of work from small rural buildings to urban office blocks constructed either by direct labour or by contract (b) Executive Engineer (Roads): Applicants must hold a recognised Civil Engineering qualifications and must have had at least five years’ experience since qualifying. They must be capable of designing and supervising the construction of both gravel and bituminous roads. A knowledge of soil mechanics is desirable. (c) Executive Engineers (Water Supply): Applicants must hold a recognised Civil Engineering qualification and must have had at least five years’ experience since qualifying Experience in the running and general organisation of water treatment plants and in the design of water supply installations is essential for one post. Experience in the design of water supply treatment plants, pumping stations, pipe lines and reinforced concrete structures and tanks is essential for the second post. Experience in the survey, design and construction of land drainage and irrigation schemes up to 300 acres is essential for the third post and applicants will also be required to assist in the design and development of schemes up to 10,000 acres. (d) Ouanfity Surveyors: Applicants must hold appropriate professional qualifications and must have had at least 10 years’ experience since qualifying. Applicants must be capable of producing firm contractural Bills of Quantities, making valuations for progress payments, measuring and valuing variations to contracts and negotiating for and preparing final accounts. The Government Quantity Surveyor’s Section is a small one with no subordinate staff: applicants must be prepared to take part in all activities leading up to contracts and the settlement of same. The salary paid for posts (a), (b), (c) and <d) will be in the scale £F1341 to £F2679 (£N.Z. 1208 to £N.Z.2414), dependent on qualifications and experience plus a gratuity of 25 per cent of gross emoluments. (e) Architectural Assistants: Applicants must be good draughtsmen with at least 10 years’ experience and must be able to adapt their knowledge to local conditions. They may also be required to take charge of smaller works. The salary paid will be on the scale £F1194 to £F1875 (N.Z.1075 - £N.Z.1690), dependent on qualifications and experience plus a gratuity of 25 per cent of gross emoluments. Successful candidates will be stationed in Suva. (f) Building Supervisor (Work Study): Applicants must have served a recognised apprenticeship in the building trade and should have from five to 10 years’ experience as a general foreman or clerk of works. Applicants must be able to prepare estimates, take off quantities schedule materials and apply labour standards and will be required to assist in the preparation of work study control documents in the Work Study Section of the department A thorough knowledge of all aspects of the building trade is essential and the successful applicant should be capable of analysing existing methods of working with a view to making improvements. A knowledge of work study methods would be an advantage but is not essential. The salary paid will be in the scale £F1341 to £F2031 (£N.Z.1208 to £N.Z.1830). dependent on qualifications and experience plus a gratuity of 25 per cent of gross emoluments. The successful candidate will be stationed in Suva. (g) Personnel Officer: Applicants must have had at least five years’ experience working in the personnel section of a large organisation and will be required to assist the Senior Personnel Officer of the Department in general matters relating to the welfare of employees, labour relations and the training of apprentices. The successful applicant will be required to undertake some training of locally recruited Assistant Personnel Officers. The salary paid will be in the scale £F134l to £F2194 £(N.Z.1208 to £N.Z.1976) dependent on qualifications and experience plus a gratuity of 25 per cent of the gross emoluments. Tour of duty for all the above posts is two, two and a half, or three years. Free tourist class air passages for yourself, your wife and family up to four children will be provided to and from the Colony. Alternatively if children are left in New Zealand at school a substantial education allowance will be paid and the Government will also provide passages for your children to visit you in Fiji twice a year. Leave on a generous scale is granted on the completion of the contract and in addition you are eligible for local leave during a tour.
