WINNING ENTRY

The photograph shows the winning entry, “Traverse,” in the monochrome section of the annual photographic competition of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club.

It won the Mitchell Cup for I. D. Gardiner. J. Ede’s “Anticipation” and “Turbulent Skyline” were second and third. Mr Gardiner’s entry in the mountaineering section of the colour films—“Tasman Splendour” —won the W. Kennedy Cup, and he was placed second with “Early Morning Climb.” Third was J. Hill’s “Aorangi Queen.” The S. D. Meares Trophy for first in the general section for colour films went to H. Wilson’s “Kimbalu Dawn.” P. White took second place with “No Title,” and E. William’s “Rakaia River” was third. The standard of photo-

graphy was very high, and had improved since he judged a similar competition some five years ago, said Mr D. Hearn, judge of the competition. Climbers seemed to take two types of photographs—

I their fellow climbers, and I scenic views. Alpine plants, i insects, geological studies, and . other aspects were well worth ■ photographing, and would lend variety to the competii tion as well as widen interest ■ in it.
