(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. C. C. McDonald, of Sydney, will not defend the men's singles title in the national table tennis championships at Christchurch, on August 31, and September 1 and 2. There are 719 entries for this year’s tournament, 69 fewer than the record entry of 788 received for the 1964 championships in Christchurch. The largest entry Is 143 in the men's singles, including the runner-up last year, M. L. Dunn (Auckland), who was New Zealand champion in 1960-61-62-63, and A. R. Tomlinson (Auckland), champion in 1959 and 1964. Notable absentees in the men's singles are W. T. Scott (Otago) and W. N. Evans (Hutt Valley). Mrs N. Traill (Northland) will defend her place as No. 1 woman player in New Zealand. Mrs Traill won the women's singles in 1960-61-62-63, did not play in 1964, hut reappeared last year to recapture the title. Mrs A. Theyers, of Auckland, who won the women’s singles in 1964 as Miss A. Mutch, and Mrs N. J. Houlihan (nee Attwood), who has been runner-up five times, will strongly challenge Mrs Traill’s supremacy. There are 72 tn the women’s singles.
