Police protected Italy’s World Cup footballers from about 700 angry fans who hurled tomatoes and insults when the beaten team arrived in Genoa by air from England early yesterday. Police cars escorted the players for the first few miles on their road journey from the airport Italy’s elimination from the World Cup, after the defeat by North Korea in the group matches, has been felt at a national humiliation and angry questions have been asked in Parliament
