Fantasy Drug’ To Be Controlled

(N Z.P.A. Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, July 22. The Government took action yesterday to stop misuse of L.S.D.2s—described as a fantasy drug—by young people in Britain.

The Home Secretary, Mr Roy Jenkins, has decided that the drug and certain other hallucinogenic substances should be controlled under the Drugs (Prevention of Misuse) Act, 1964. He laid a draft Order before Parliament yesterday, after consultations with the Poisons Board. Among the other substances to be controlled are psilocybin and mescaline. The draft Order has to be approved by resolution of both Houses of Parliament before being made by the Home Secretary.

It will come into force at the expiration of 30 days from the day on which it is made. L.S.D. 25—lysergic acid diethylamide—is an alkaloid of ergot and is used in the investigation of mental illness.

The substance Is colourless, odourless and tasteless. Medical opinion seems to be generally agreed that it can have harmful psychical effects on people with pre-psychotic personalities. It is not an offence at present, to be in unauthorised possession of the drug.
