Dogs

Sir,—lf “Cleanliness” were really concerned about the health of babies crawling on the floor he should remove his shoes and those of his children on entering his home. Dogs, after all, are dosed against diseases affecting man, but not so human beings. Sputum contains tuberculosis, influenza, and other virus infections often in amounts lethal to small children when swallowed or inhaled. We have no protection against this form of filth in our streets, unless all spitters were followed with sputum mugs! Most gardens are manured either chemically or organically, and manure is manure whether it be dog, sheep, fowl, or human, and it can be seen. On the other hand, dust or dropletborne infection from human sputum containing, as it does, most diseases known to man, is a source of disease of which most people are completely unaware and is therefore a thousand times more dangerous.—Yours, etc., D.N.D.
