ARMS SHATTERED
QYDNEY doctors have estimated that at least 50 drivers a week have their right arms torn off or shattered because they drive with their elbows protruding from vehicle windows, the Press Association reports. The doctors say each of the 15 to 20 major hospitals in Sydney receive three or four drivers with such injuries every week.
The New South Wales Government has announced plans to fine motorists who drive with their elbows out of vehicle windows.
A police spokesman said drivers’ elbows were particularly vulnerable in “side swiping” accidents, but could also be injured when one vehicle rammed the side of another. A doctor at St. Vincent's Hospital said the arm injuries were the most prevalent motor accident injury with which the hospital had to deal. Another said: “We see an increasing number of ‘elbow drivers’ after accidents, with their arms torn out of their sockets.”
