Dairy, Meat Export To Peru Suggested

HAMILTON, July 21.
There is an opportunity for New Zealand to develop a trade in both meat and dairy produce with Peru, according to Dr. P. Bruniby, regional officer of Latin America for the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation.
He said both Chile and Peru were importing large amounts of meat and dairy products and this was likely to continue.
South America was more than likely to experience a shortage of meat within the next five to 10 years. Imports of dairy produce were also likely to increase substantially.
However, some South American countries had an embargo on dairy produce imports and a further difficulty was the lack of direct transport to these countries from New Zealand.
In Chile the availability of foreign exchange was also a problem, but this was not such a limiting factor in Peru, he said. There was only an increase of 1 per cent in livestock production in South America although demand had increased
at the rate of 5 per cent, said Dr. Brumby.
, Two serious limitations on progress were the extreme shortage of technical staff and institutions and the extreme shortage of development finance, he said. The World Bank was stepping up its loans for livestock production. The need for expansion was being met by the development of joint programmes by the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and the F.A.O.
Dr. Brumby has been four years with the United Nations and his present headquarters are in Santiago. He was formerly chief animal geneticist at the Ruakura Agricultural Research centre. He is on leave in New Zealand.
