N.Z. AT TALKS

Indonesia’s Future

<N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, July 22.

The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said today that New Zealand was taking part in preliminary talks in Tokyo to discuss—with the approval of the Indonesian Government—problems relating to Indonesia’s economic difficulties.

But, he said, the Government had not yet decided whether to take part in a formal conference designed to help Indonesia out of its economic problems. “We shall need to study the reports of our representatives in Tokyo and assess carefully whether the work of the proposed conference is likely to benefit our own consideration of aid activities in Indonesia,” he said. Mr Holyoake said New Zealand was not, a creditor nation in regard to Indonesia. “We are, however, concerned to see stability restored to this area.”
