‘Nerve Centre’ For Civil Defence
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, July 21.
An emergency “nerve centre” for civil defence communications headquarters has been established at an estimated cost of £2500 in three studios deep under Broadcasting House, Wellington.
The Director of Civil Defence, Brigadier R. C. Queree, said today the centre would be used only in the event of a natural disaster, such as earthquake or major flood. In the event of war, the Government would declare a national emergency and further planning would be needed.
I Fully operational, the [centre would have a staff of 112 in the operations room and 45 altogether.
It would take a mere 30 minutes for the whole centre to get into top gear and it was possible for the first person in to set the communications equipment working.
One of the studios was reserved for the Cabinet with a room beside it for the Prime Minister.
Today the Minister of Civil Defence (Mr Seath) inspected the headquarters and had the equipment and operating procedures explained to him.
