EXPLANATION
AUCKLAND, July 21.
The Director of Security Intelligence (Brigadier H. E. Gilbert) was given leave to make a statement on oath to the security inquiry yesterday afternoon about information supplied to the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) on the activities of Mr David Godfrey, a member of his department
He referred to a statement made by Mr Godfrey in cross-examination earlier that the Prime Minister had been incorrect in saying that Mr Godfrey’s activities at
(New Zealand Press Association)
Auckland University had been confined to one matter only.
Brigadier Gilbert said the Prime Minister’s statement in the House had been based on a report from himself regarding the first article in “Outspoke,” which contained one contention referring to the questioning. about Russian students.
The Prime Minister had replied in the House solely on .that basis. Mr Holyoake had been advised at that stage solely of the first “Outspoke” article.
