PAINTING STOLEN

Oil Taken From Frame (N.Z. Press Association] AUCKLAND, July 21. A valuable 16th century painting was stolen from its frame in the Auckland Art Gallery early this afternoon. The painting. of the Madonna and Child with St. Sebastian by the Italian artist, Paris Bordone (1500—1571) is in oil on a wooden panel. It measures about 10 inches by 10 inches. It was taken from its frame in a prominent position in the Mackelvie gallery between 2 p.m. and 2.12 p.m. The head keeper of the gallery, Mr Hamish Keith, said tonight the painting, presented to the city in 1960 by Mr N. B. Spencer, was an important item in the collection.

Mr Spencer bought the painting for the gallery for £450 from the collection of Mr W. B. Coltart, of Hastings.
