N.Z. BREW. EXPORTS
Sharp Rise In Three Years (N.Z. Preus Association) WELLINGTON. July 21. Export trade of New Zealand Breweries, Ltd., has increased threefold in the last three years. In its last year it exported more than 180,000 gallons of beer. These facts were mentioned by the chairman of directors of the company (Mr M. O. Barnett) at its annual meeting today. The company has accepted the challenge of Government for industry to increase and diversify New Zealand exports, he said. All were aware of the limitations upon free enterprise that a continuing adverse balance of trade must impose upon New Zealand. New Zealand Breweries therefore participated actively within the export development group of the New Zealand Manufacturers Federation and had explored all markets that seemed likely to provide an outlet for its goods. It had surveyed the Pacific Islands, Tahiti, New Caledonia, Malaysia, Indonesia. Hong Kong, Japan and the west coast of the United States and Canada. Its packaged beers were manufactured almost entirely from indigenous raw materials.
The company’s earnings on the American market were expected to yield an additional 100,000 dollars in overseas funds this year, Mr Barnett said.
