Hereford Street
Sir, —Now that the contractors have finished in Hereford street, between Fitzgerald avenue and Barbadoes street; could the traffic department have them remove their surplus timber, drums, etc? At present Hereford street is being used as a yard by the contractor, thus depriving motorists of parking space.—Yours, etc.. MOTORIST. July 12, 1966.
[The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: “The contract referred to is the first section of the central area relief sewer which is being installed by a contractor for the Christchurch Drainage Board. This work is required to meet the needs of the development in the central area. Such contracts inevitably cause a certain amount of inconvenience to the public which the board endeavours to keep to a limited area. The contractor has now cleared all material from Hereford street between Barbadoes street and Fitzgerald avenue, but to obtain the maximum progress, storage has to be created as close as possible to the works as they move to the west along Hereford street, and parking has to be restricted in the immediate vicinity of the works, not only for the contractor’s needs, but in the interest of public safety.”]
