Pair Of Dutch Paintings Fetch £95 At Sale
The recent interest in Dutch paintings, which began with the discovery of what was at first believed to be an original Breughel in the home of a Feilding family, had a marked influence on the bidding at the second day of an auction sale of antiques and other objets d’art at the Durham Street Art Gallery yesterday. A pair of old gilt-framed Dutch paintings, unsigned by the artist, brought the best price of the sale—£9s. The sale was completed yesterday. Another gilt-framed painting on copper by an unknown Dutch artist brought £2l. Many Japanese and Chinese paintings on silk and rice paper were also offered, but brought only a few pounds each. A large Chinese four-fold : screen, heavily carved, with
ivory mounted lacquer panels was knocked down at £6O. Some good prices were received for antique furniture. The highest price was £75 for a large Dutch two-door ormulu cabinet.
A large Georgian mahogany casket-shaped wine cooler realised £65, and a mahogany rocking chair, upholstered in red silk, was sold for £2l. A small glassed display cabinet brought £3B, and a burr walnut wardrobe with drawers fetched £27 10s. A collection of assorted Maori artifacts including a mere, a bowl, a wooden comb and other items was sold to one buyer for £27 10s. Highest price for rugs and carpets—£6s—was reached for an Indian carpet measuring 15 feet by 12 feet. Another smaller carpet brought £32 10s. Bidding was brisk for the assorted offering of jewellery. A long rose quartz necklace went for £ll, and a pair of greenstone and gold drop earrings brought £B.
