Silver Tureen Brings £73 In Antique Sale
A George 111 silver sauce tureen, dated 1777-78, brought the highest price of £73 at an auction sale of antiques and other objets d’art at the Durham Street Art Gallery yesterday. All the oriental and some of the English china, the silverware and some of the brassware were knocked down during a day of fairly brisk bidding. A large Japanese carved ivory temple housing an ivory Buddha brought £57 10s, while bidding for a Georgian silver urn dated 1790 reached £52 10s before it was sold. A candelabrum plated on copper fetched £32, and a large 18th century pewter-covered tankard, seated on three lions, sold for £l6. A fine pair of white figure ornaments with forget-me-not garlands brought £23. There was considerable de-
mand for all of the oriental ware. A pair of large blue and white vases was sold for £3O, and the same price was reached for a pair of old Chinese bronze figures. A pair of Japanese Imari vases, one of which was slightly damaged, realised £2O. Buyers were disappointed when the sale stopped before an early English copper spirit kettle and a stand with white porcelain handles was offered. One buyer had waited most of the day for this one item.
ft will be one of the first lots to be offered when the sale continues today. Other items will include glassware, furniture, a number of pictures and books. A magnificent Chinese four fold screen heavily carved with ivory mounted lacquer panels is also expected to attract several prospective buyers.
