CHECK ON HEART

Examination On Empyreus (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. The former New Zealand four-year-old Empyreus has undergone a cardiograph exami nation to check his heart. His trainer, B. Courtney, said that since his recent failures in Brisbane, Empyreus had undergone a series of veterinary tests, including blood counts, but all had proved normal. He said the cardiograph was taken as a last effort to check on Empyreus’s condition. Courtney said that if the test gave Empyreus a clean bill of health he would be prepared for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, but if it showed he had any heart disability, he would be turned out immediately. Courtney is also hoping to train his other New Zealand horse, Rio, for spring racing. Rio has not started since he injured his leg on February 26, but has made a good recovery.
