Canterbury Has Chilly Day
Snow, hail and rain chilled Canterbury yesterday in one of the coldest days of the winter. In Christchurch the maximum temperature was 39 degrees.
Motorists using the passes to the West Coast were advised to carry chains, but both routes were reported open late last evening. Temperatures were very low throughout the day, although there were brief periods of sunshine in the city late in the morning. The Meteorological Office at Christchurch Airport reported the temperature at 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. was 33 degrees, rising to 38 degrees at noon. The maximum of 39 degrees was recorded at 2 p.m.
There was about 2in of frozen snow on the Christchurch to Akaroa road at Hilltop yesterday morning, but it was soon graded. Parts of the Summit road on the Port Hills were reported to be impassable without chains early yesterday morning and yesterday afternoon the inland Kaikoura route was impassable without chains.
Yesterday morning there was about 6in of snow at the top of the Lewis Pass, but the road was graded by the Ministry of Works.
