Aranui High School
Sir, —It is difficult to correct an impression once made but I wish to put into perspective a remark of mine quoted in today’s issue. I did not make the caning of boys a major reason for soundproofing my room; nor did 1 ask the board to pay. Your featuring in bold type what was virtually an explanatory aside has misled many people and offended others. It would have been better reporting, more in accord with “Nihil Utile Quod Non Honestum,” to have quoted the board member who, waiting outside the study on “report evenings,” heard the conversation within. At this school corporal punishment is resorted to by the headmaster and first assistant only. The latter, as a “master of discipline,” canes more frequently than an ordinary class teacher would, but I am certain neither in amount nor severity is caning excessive. Your inference and your type were most unfortunate. Yours, etc. W. J. A. BRITTENDEN, Headmaster, Aranui High School. July 20, 1966.
